Nellie was struggling. She lost her sister earlier this year due to diabetes, she was on the verge of losing her house with nowhere else to go, and she couldn’t afford healthy food to manage her own diabetes.
Then Nellie was introduced to Lifelong’s food and nutrition program, Chicken Soup Brigade, to receive nutritious meals and fresh produce delivered right to her door.
In collaboration with the Indian Health Board Community Clinic, we helped her find housing assistance so she didn’t have to choose between paying her rent or paying for groceries to support her health.
Now, Nellie is enjoying new vegetables and trying healthy recipes crafted by Chicken Soup Brigade’s Chef and Nutrition Team. Bok choy has become a personal favorite for her, and she’s found a way to add it to almost every meal, from soups to sandwiches, and she’s traded boxed pasta for Chicken Soup Brigade’s freshly prepared macaroni and cheese as a healthy and delicious alternative.
In just two months, Nellie has begun to lose weight, after months of no progress, and her blood sugar levels are now within the normal limits with the hopes of soon decreasing her medication.
Nellie is grateful for the Chicken Soup Brigade staff, volunteers, and donors who have supported her.
